Reverb is the non-direct or reflected sound in a room or space. After the initial sound, reflections build up as they bounce around around the walls and off objects in the space. Every sound that isn’t going directly from the sound source to the listener’s ears is reverberation. In essence, reverb a set of closely spaced echoes, with usually first or early reflections that may be distinct and then a series of other echoes that blur together decaying in level. This wash of sound extends the length of short sounds and choruses longer ones.

Delays are often perceived as echo and can make the listener feel like sounds exist in a room or space while avoiding adding the wash of sound a reverb creates. This can help open up the mix. Think of delay as a Reverb lite! They are also perfect for special effects like stereo ping-pongs and more.
