We see a lot of confusion on our forums and in the social media about digital audio, particularly the artifacts created during Analog to Digital (recording) and Digital to Analog (playback) conversion. So it is with some excitement we re-upload the 'Digital Show & Tell' video by Monty of Xiph.org, the developers of the open-source Ogg Vorbis codec supported by FL Studio.

Monty presents a series of well thought out, real-rime, demonstrations of sampling and sample payback including the effects of - sample-rate, bit-depth and dither. Monty uses both digital analysis tools and vintage analog bench equipment to walk us through the principles of Digital to Analog and Analog to Digital conversion.

Interpolation is a curve fitting process that computes intermediate sample ‘amplitude’ data between the known sample points (filling in the gaps). This will reduce aliasing when samples are transposed.

 

 Interpolation is only used when the pitch is transposed. Like most things, interpolation uses some CPU power, so FL Studio gives you the option to have different live and rendered interpolation settings.

 

So what about other plugins?

 

VST, Dx & FL Native plugins (synths & samplers) may or may not have their own internal interpolation settings (sometimes called over-sampling).

 

If you check Sytrus for example you will see it has its own Live (Draft) and Render settings. All good plugins interpolate/oversample or whatever, but some just don’t show these settings to the user.

 

To make sure plugins DO put their best foot forward when rendering, use the “HQ for all plugins” on the Render dialog and the select “Notify about rendering mode” on the Wrapper settings.
