Project 2
Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation in Southeast Asia
PI - Ron Borland, PhD

One of six Thai warning labels. see all six labels

Includes an expansion of our 4-country cohort study to Thailand and Malaysia, to test if the same policies effective in developed countries can transfer to developing countries.

Thailand has ratified the FCTC treaty while Malaysia has not. As of March, Thailand has adopted graphic warnings on cigarette packs. Given these differences, we will be able to test the hypothesis that these labels will have a greater impact on smoking cessation in comparison to the developed countries.

Due to the relatively diffrerences in the presence of tobacco control messages in Thailand and Malaysia, we are currently studying tobacco control impact in combination with cultural and socioeconomic differences.

In Thailand and Malaysia, as well as in most countries in Southeast Asia, the problems facing governments in designing tobacco control measures include a strong informal market and an inability to provide effective enforcement throughout the country.
